17/12/08 - Affliction boss denies Tito signing will be announced
Affliction vice president Tom Atencio has downplayed talk that former UFC light-heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz will be announced as an Affliction fighter at a press conference later today.
Speaking to Fighters Only at the weekend, Atencio said that talks are still ongoing with Ortiz but nothing has been agreed.
“I’m actually talking to Tito. We have a great relationship and I really like Tito a lot,” said Atencio.
“But he can’t even fight until July [because of recent back surgery], so at this point it doesn’t really make sense for us to talk about anything.
“We hang out, we talk to each other and if eventually he goes with us, great. If he goes back to the UFC, then I wish him nothing but the best.”
The Affliction press conference takes place at 12:00 pacific time and features Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett among others.
Noticeable by his absence is Fedor Emelianenko, who will defend his WAMMA heavyweight title against Arlovski in January.
It was reported recently that his failure to win this year’s Sambo Championships in Russia has prompted him to cancel all press tours in favour of intensive isolation training.
