04/11/08 - Exclusive: UFC signs Irish Top Team welterweight for Dublin event

Dublin welterweight Tom ‘The Tank’ Egan will make his debut at UFC 93, Fighters Only can exclusively reveal.

Egan, 20, is undefeated in his six-fight career and cannot wait to showcase his skills in front of his hometown crowd.

“It’s going to be a fantastic experience,” he said. “I was at UFC 89 in Birmingham last month just kind of taking it all in, and the atmosphere was unbelievable.”

Egan is part of Irish Top Team (a member of the Top Team International Fight Federation) and trains with John Kavanagh – the only Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt in Ireland - at SBG Dublin.

“I would describe myself as a mixed martial artist,” he says. “I do like to use the jab, I like to box, but I also make sure I have all the tools I need for every phase of the fight.”

“Ideally one day I’ll be wrestling like Georges St. Pierre and have jiu jitsu like BJ Penn,” he laughs.

His opponent in January is rumoured to be British welterweight standout John Hathaway, who has also just signed a four-fight deal with the UFC.

Hathaway (10-0) is a veteran of Cage Rage and some of the UK’s higher-profile regional shows, including FX3 and ZT Fight Night.
