16/10/08 - UFC heading for Finland?
The UFC is looking at staging an event in Finland in the coming year as the organisation proceeds with a European expansion program.
Speaking at the press conference for UFC 89 earlier today, UFC UK division president Marshall Zelaznik revealed the company’s plans for continental conquest.
“Italy, Germany and Finland and are all on the list, which I think demonstrates our global commitment to this sport,” he stated.
He added that fans can expect an announcement in “the next couple of months” regarding an event in Europe.
While a desire to expand into continental Europe has long been expressed by the UFC, Finland has never before been mooted as a possible staging ground.
But it has probably the best MMA pedigree of the Scandinavian countries, given that the sport is illegal in Norway and was banned for a while in Sweden due to lack of regulation.
Interestingly, Finland also borders Russia, and a show there would perhaps pave the way for the UFC to use some Russian talent.
