06/10/09 - UK: UFC vet Egan defeated at Strike & Submit 12

Local hero defeats former UFC fighter
In the preliminary fight of the night, local North East fighter Rob Mills took on Irish fighter, Tom Egan, a young athlete who tasted the limelight, when he took on John Hathaway at UFC 93 in Dublin. Egan, hoping to build up some wins that would hopefully get him back into the UFC, failed as he ran in to the older Mills, who although faced a young up and coming UFC veteran, seemed ridiculously comfortable as the fight got underway. Mills, who often comes out strong looking for the early finish, dabbled in a variety of kicks and proceeded to find his range before Egan scooped him up for an awesome take down. It was here though, Egan found himself trapped in a tight guillotine, Mills cranked the intensity up to the max and got the victory via tap out. A great win for Mills, a long road for Egan.
In the main event, Wolfslair fighter Curt Warburton faced SBG team member Tommy Maguire. Warburton, is a relatively quiet man of UK MMA, but a fighter who has great potential and seems to improve every with every bout. Warburton displayed some great endurance as the fight mainly consisted of Maguire taking a barrage of his ground and pound. Maguire proved some brave resilience but never did enough to get in the mix, and found himself having to deal with a bloody face early on in the fight. In the final round, Maguire did show some decent stand up and seemed to land a few shots, but it was never going to be enough so long in to the fight. Warburton had done enough and took home a deserved victory.
A special mention goes to a young up and comer, who you may have seen profiled in our 'One to watch' section. NX Gen VT fighter Alex Enlund showed great maturity by dominating tough Irish man Kevin Carney with a text book performance. Enlund took his opponent down with ease to then land some precision punches and elbows before taking his opponents back for the RNC in 2mins 36 of the first round.
